Why MP4?

Why convert WebM to MP4

Chrome and many screen recorders save WebM. MP4 (H.264 + AAC) is the format almost every device, editor and upload form accepts.

About WEBM and MP4

WebM is an open, royalty-free video format created for the web. It usually holds VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis audio, and it plays in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Many phones, TVs and editing programs handle it poorly or not at all.

MP4 is the most widely supported video container. It usually holds H.264 video with AAC audio and plays on phones, TVs, editing software, social platforms and every major browser.

When to convert WEBM to MP4

Convert when you need the video to play on a phone or TV, open in an editor, upload to a platform that rejects WebM, or send to someone on an older device. Chrome-based screen recorders commonly save WebM.

Tip

Convert once, from the original file, and keep the original until you have checked the MP4.

Your files stay on your device

This tool runs in your browser. Your files are not uploaded to RecBeam or anywhere else, there is no sign-up and nothing is added to your file. Browse all the free tools.

WebM to MP4: frequently asked questions

Will my video lose quality?

The video is re-encoded to H.264 at high quality (CRF 23). For screen recordings the difference is very hard to see, and the MP4 is usually a similar size.

Why is my WebM file not playing on iPhone or PowerPoint?

Some apps and devices do not support WebM. Converting to MP4 fixes that.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no price, no account, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own computer. Your video never leaves your device.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to about 1 GB work well. Very large files depend on your computer's memory and can be slow.

Why does the first conversion take longer?

The first time, your browser downloads the converter (about 30 MB). It is cached after that.
